How Electromagnetism Unifies Nature
From Ørsted's compass deflection and Faraday's lines of force to Maxwell's four equations and the wave nature of light
“How did nineteenth-century physicists discover that electricity, magnetism, and light are all manifestations of a single universal force?”
For millennia, humans treated electricity and magnetism as two completely unrelated natural curiosities: static electricity was about amber and sparks, while magnetism was about lodestones and compass needles. In 1820, a twitching compass needle in Copenhagen revealed that electric currents generate magnetic loops. Over the next forty-five years, Michael Faraday discovered that moving magnets induce electric currents, and James Clerk Maxwell synthesized these discoveries into four partial differential equations. By adding a single missing term—the displacement current—Maxwell proved that oscillating electromagnetic fields ripple through empty space at three hundred thousand kilometers per second, unveiling the astonishing truth that light itself is an electromagnetic wave.
To understand the failure modes and edge cases detailed in this piece, we recommend familiarizing yourself with these foundational mechanisms first:
Look at the light pouring through your window, the Wi-Fi signal connecting your laptop to the router, the motor spinning inside an electric car, and the magnetic clasp snapping your laptop lid shut.
To human perception, these phenomena feel completely unrelated:
- Light is a warm, radiant illumination that allows your eyes to see color.
- Electricity is an invisible current flowing through copper wires that shocks your finger or charges your phone.
- Magnetism is a silent, mysterious tug between steel refrigerator magnets and compass needles.
- Wi-Fi and Radio are invisible signals passing effortlessly through drywall and glass.

For ninety-nine percent of human history, natural philosophers treated electricity, magnetism, and optics as three completely isolated branches of knowledge.
Between 1820 and 1865, a breathtaking series of laboratory experiments and mathematical deductions tore down the walls between them.
Physicists discovered that moving electric charges create magnetism, that moving magnets create electric currents, and that when electric and magnetic fields oscillate together in harmony, they create a self-sustaining wave that flies through the vacuum of empty space at three hundred thousand kilometers per second.
Light, electricity, radio, and magnetism are not separate phenomena. They are the four faces of a single, unified fundamental force: Electromagnetism.
1. The Copenhagen Accident: Ørsted’s Compass (1820)
As we saw in How Humans Discovered Electricity, the invention of the chemical battery by Alessandro Volta in 1800 gave scientists their first continuous direct electric current ($DC$).
For twenty years after Volta, scientists used batteries to electroplate metals, decompose water into hydrogen and oxygen, and produce brilliant electric arcs. But electricity was still viewed as a fluid confined to wires.
In April 1820, Danish physicist Hans Christian Ørsted was preparing a lecture demonstration for students at the University of Copenhagen.
On his demonstration table sat a large Voltaic battery, a length of platinum wire, and an ordinary magnetic navigational compass:

Electricity and Magnetism were secretly connected!
- With the battery switch open, the compass needle pointed serenely toward Earth’s magnetic North Pole, aligned parallel to the wire.
- Ørsted closed the circuit. Electric current surged through the platinum wire.
- To Ørsted's utter astonishment, the compass needle violently twitched and swung nearly ninety degrees, locking itself perpendicular to the wire!
- When Ørsted reversed the direction of the electric battery current, the compass needle swung in the opposite direction!
The scientific world was electrified.
For the first time in human history, an electric current had exerted a mechanical force on a magnetic lodestone. Electricity was not merely a static fluid; an electric current generates an invisible magnetic field in the space surrounding it!
Ampère’s Law and the Right-Hand Rule
Within months of hearing Ørsted’s news, French mathematician and physicist André-Marie Ampère performed a flurry of brilliant experiments in Paris.
Ampère showed that:
- Two parallel wires carrying electric currents in the same direction magnetically attract each other.
- Two parallel wires carrying currents in opposite directions magnetically repel each other.
- The magnetic field ($\mathbf{B}$) does not radiate straight outward from the wire like spokes on a wheel; it circles around the wire in concentric loops, obeying the Right-Hand Grip Rule:

2. Faraday’s Breakthrough: Induction (1831)
If an electric current can create a magnetic field, the inverse question immediately demanded an answer:
Can a magnetic field create an electric current?
For ten years, scientists across Europe tried and failed. They placed powerful iron magnets next to coils of copper wire, attached sensitive galvanometers (current meters), and waited.
The meter needle never budged. Nothing happened. A stationary magnet refused to generate a single drop of electricity.
In August 1831, a largely self-taught London bookbinder’s apprentice turned laboratory genius named Michael Faraday solved the riddle at the Royal Institution.
Faraday realized what everyone else had missed: A static magnet does nothing. Electricity is generated only by a CHANGING magnetic field!

Galvanometer = 0 Galvanometer DEFLECTS!
(Zero current!) (Electric Current Flows!)
Faraday wound two separate coils of insulated copper wire around opposite sides of a soft iron ring:
- When he connected the primary coil to a battery, the galvanometer on the secondary coil gave a sharp, momentary kick, then dropped back to zero.
- While the current flowed steadily, the secondary coil registered zero current.
- But the instant Faraday disconnected the battery, the galvanometer gave another sharp kick in the opposite direction!
Electricity appeared only during the moments of transition—when the magnetic field was either growing or collapsing!
Faraday confirmed this by taking a permanent bar magnet and thrusting it by hand into a hollow coil of copper wire:
- Shoving the magnet in induced an electric current.
- Holding the magnet motionless inside produced zero current.
- Pulling the magnet out induced a current in the reverse direction.
This is Electromagnetic Induction, formalized as Faraday’s Law:
$$\mathcal{E} = -\frac{d\Phi_B}{dt}$$
The induced voltage (electromotive force $\mathcal{E}$) is directly proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux ($\Phi_B$) through the loop.
The negative sign (discovered by Heinrich Lenz) represents nature’s fundamental inertia: the induced current always flows in such a direction that its own magnetic field opposes the change that created it!
The Machine that Powered the World
Faraday’s discovery transformed human civilization.
Before 1831, electricity was an expensive chemical toy generated by dissolving expensive zinc plates in sulfuric acid.
Faraday realized that if you spin a loop of copper wire between the poles of a magnet, the magnetic flux through the loop continuously expands, collapses, reverses, and expands again.
This creates a continuous, oscillating flow of electric current: Alternating Current ($AC$).

Every coal power plant, nuclear reactor, hydroelectric dam, and wind turbine operating on Earth today is nothing more than a giant mechanical engine designed to do one simple thing: spin a copper coil inside a magnetic field to exploit Faraday’s Law of Induction.
3. Faraday’s Lines of Force: The Invention of the Field
Beyond inventing the electric generator, Faraday gave physics its most profound modern conceptual tool: the Field.
In the 18th century, physicists followed Isaac Newton's belief in Action-at-a-Distance. They believed that the Sun pulled on the Earth, or that two electrical charges pulled on each other, across millions of kilometers of empty, inert nothingness.
Faraday had no formal mathematical training; he could not solve a differential equation. But he possessed the most powerful visual intuition in scientific history.
Faraday sprinkled iron filings onto a sheet of paper resting atop a bar magnet. The tiny iron slivers immediately aligned themselves into magnificent, graceful curves arching from the North Pole to the South Pole:

◄─────│ NORTH SOUTH │─────►
╰─────╮ ╭─────╯
╰─────────────────────────╯
The space around the magnet is NOT empty!
It is filled with real, physical, elastic LINES OF FORCE!
Faraday insisted that these lines were not mathematical fictions.
The space between charges and magnets is not empty. It is filled with a physical medium of tension, stress, and energy: a Force Field.
- A positive charge does not reach across empty space to push a negative charge.
- A positive charge distorts the electric field in the space immediately surrounding it.
- That distortion ripples outward through the field from point to neighboring point.
- The negative charge simply reacts to the local electric field touching it at its own position!
4. James Clerk Maxwell: The Mathematical Symphony (1861–1865)
In the 1850s, a brilliant young Scottish mathematician named James Clerk Maxwell arrived at Cambridge University.
While most European professors dismissed Faraday’s "lines of force" as the crude visual metaphors of an uneducated experimenter, Maxwell saw something profound:
"As I proceeded with the study of Faraday, I perceived that his method of conceiving the phenomena was also a mathematical one, though not exhibited in the conventional form of mathematical symbols... I found that these methods were capable of being expressed in the ordinary mathematical forms."
Maxwell set out to translate Faraday's visual fields into rigorous partial differential vector calculus.
In 1865, Maxwell published A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field. He unified everything known about electricity, magnetism, and circuits into Four Master Equations:
Look at the extraordinary symmetry between the third and fourth equations:
- Faraday’s Law: A changing magnetic field produces a circulating electric field ($-\frac{\partial \mathbf{B}}{\partial t}$).
- The Ampère-Maxwell Law: A moving current ($\mathbf{J}$) produces a circulating magnetic field...
And here, Maxwell made his greatest conceptual breakthrough.
The Missing Piece: The Displacement Current
When Maxwell examined Ampère’s Law using vector calculus, he noticed a fatal mathematical contradiction.
Consider charging an electrical capacitor—two metal plates separated by an insulating gap of air or vacuum:
THE CAPACITOR CONTRADICTION
Current in Wire Current in Wire

│ INSULATING │
│ GAP │
│ (No physical │

Ampère's original law said: Magnetic field B requires physical current J.
In the wire: J > 0 -> Magnetic field exists!
Inside the gap: J = 0 -> Magnetic field should instantly DISAPPEAR!
In the copper wire leading to the capacitor, physical electrons flow, creating a magnetic field.
Between the two plates of the capacitor, however, sits empty space or glass. No physical electrons flow across the gap!
Under Ampère's original equation, the magnetic field would abruptly vanish inside the gap and reappear on the other side, violating the mathematical conservation of electric charge!
Maxwell asked: What IS happening inside the gap between the capacitor plates?
As positive charge piles up on one plate and negative charge piles up on the other, the electric field ($\mathbf{E}$) between the plates is changing rapidly!
Maxwell made a bold, visionary leap: he declared that a changing electric field acts exactly like an electric current!
He added a new term to Ampère’s Law, called the Displacement Current:
$$\mathbf{J}_D = \epsilon_0 \frac{\partial \mathbf{E}}{\partial t}$$
With this single stroke of mathematical genius, the symmetry was complete:

A CHANGING Electric Field ──► PRODUCES a Magnetic Field!
(Maxwell's Addition) ( ∂E / ∂t ──► B )
Nature’s mirror was balanced.
5. The Revelation: Light is an Electromagnetic Wave!
Now, Maxwell asked the ultimate question:
What happens in empty space, far away from all wires, batteries, and electric charges ($\rho = 0, \mathbf{J} = 0$), when an electric field changes?
Let us trace the chain reaction through Maxwell’s equations:
- Suppose an electric charge jiggles. Its electric field ($\mathbf{E}$) oscillates.
- By Maxwell’s displacement current, that changing electric field induces an oscillating magnetic field ($\mathbf{B}$).
- By Faraday’s Law, that changing magnetic field induces a new oscillating electric field ($\mathbf{E}$)!
- That new electric field induces another magnetic field...
The fields leapfrog each other across empty space!
The oscillating electric and magnetic fields form a self-sustaining, propagating wave. The electric field oscillates vertically; the magnetic field oscillates horizontally; and the wave travels forward, perpendicular to both!

Maxwell combined his equations mathematically by taking the curl of the curl, deriving the classical Wave Equation:
$$\nabla^2 \mathbf{E} = \mu_0 \epsilon_0 \frac{\partial^2 \mathbf{E}}{\partial t^2}$$
In physics, whenever an equation takes the form $\nabla^2 \psi = \frac{1}{v^2} \frac{\partial^2 \psi}{\partial t^2}$, the quantity $v$ is the exact propagation speed of the wave:
$$v = \frac{1}{\sqrt{\mu_0 \epsilon_0}}$$
Look at the two constants inside the square root:
- $\epsilon_0$ (Vacuum Permittivity): A constant measuring the electrostatic force between two static charges in a vacuum, measured by Charles-Augustin de Coulomb using a torsion balance. $$\epsilon_0 \approx 8.854 \times 10^{-12} \text{ Farads per meter}$$
- $\mu_0$ (Vacuum Permeability): A constant measuring the magnetic force between two current-carrying wires, measured by André-Marie Ampère. $$\mu_0 = 4\pi \times 10^{-7} \approx 1.257 \times 10^{-6} \text{ Henrys per meter}$$
Neither of these numbers had anything to do with light, astronomy, optics, or mirrors. They were measured on wooden laboratory tables using battery wires, capacitors, and static electricity!
Maxwell plugged these two tabletop electrical numbers into his speed equation:
$$v = \frac{1}{\sqrt{(8.854 \times 10^{-12}) \times (1.257 \times 10^{-6})}}$$
$$v \approx \mathbf{299,792,458 \text{ meters per second}}$$
Maxwell stared at the resulting number in stunned disbelief.
It was three hundred thousand kilometers per second—the exact speed of light measured by Hippolyte Fizeau and Léon Foucault using spinning toothed wheels and mirrors!
In one of the most sublime understatements in the history of science, Maxwell wrote in 1865:
"The velocity of the transverse undulations in our hypothetical medium, calculated from the electro-magnetic experiments of MM. Kohlrausch and Weber, agrees so exactly with the velocity of light calculated from the optical experiments of M. Fizeau, that we can scarcely avoid the inference that light consists in the transverse undulations of the same medium which is the cause of electric and magnetic phenomena."
The mystery of light, which had baffled humanity since the dawn of civilization, was solved.
Light was not a shower of Newtonian corpuscles, nor an acoustic vibration of air. Light is a travelling wave of pure, intertwined electricity and magnetism.
6. Heinrich Hertz and the Radio Universe (1887)
Maxwell died of abdominal cancer in 1879 at the age of forty-eight, before his theory could be experimentally confirmed. Many conservative physicists doubted his equations, calling them an abstract mathematical fantasy.
In 1887, at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic in Germany, a thirty-year-old physicist named Heinrich Hertz set out to settle the question.
Hertz constructed a simple spark-gap transmitter: a high-voltage induction coil connected to two brass spheres separated by a tiny air gap.
Several meters across the room, on the other side of the laboratory, he placed a simple receiver: a circular loop of copper wire with a tiny spark gap, with no physical wires or battery connected to it.

- Hertz pumped high voltage into the transmitter. Violent electrical sparks jumped across the brass spheres, oscillating back and forth at roughly $50 \text{ million times per second}$ ($50 \text{ MHz}$).
- Across the dark room, with zero wires attached, a tiny, faint microscopic spark jumped across the gap of the copper receiver loop!
- The electrical energy had leaped across empty space.
Hertz tested the invisible waves with metal mirrors, prism blocks of pitch asphalt, and wire polarization grids. The waves reflected off metal like light, refracted through prisms like light, polarized through grids like light, and traveled at the exact speed of light!
When asked by his students what practical use these waves might have, Hertz famously replied:
"It's of no use whatsoever... this is just an experiment that proves Maestro Maxwell was right—we just have these mysterious electromagnetic waves that we cannot see with the naked eye. But they are there."
Within a decade, Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi used Hertz's "useless" waves to send wireless Morse code across the Atlantic Ocean, launching the age of Radio, Television, Radar, Cellular Phones, and Wi-Fi.
7. The Electromagnetic Spectrum Continuum
Hertz proved that visible light is only a tiny, narrow sliver of a vast, continuous ocean of electromagnetic radiation.
Every electromagnetic wave travels through vacuum at the exact same constant speed:
$$c = \lambda \cdot f \approx 3 \times 10^8 \text{ m/s}$$
Where $\lambda$ is the wavelength and $f$ is the frequency.
The only physical difference between a radio wave carrying an FM broadcast and an X-ray imaging a fractured bone is how fast the electric and magnetic fields oscillate:

- When an atomic nucleus undergoes radioactive decay or a dying star collapses in a supernova (see How Stars Die and Go Supernova), it spits out ultra-high-frequency gamma-ray photons.
All of it—from the cosmic microwave background left over from the Big Bang to the laser pulses carrying petabytes of data through transoceanic fiber-optic cables—is the exact same four-part harmony composed by James Clerk Maxwell in 1865.

The unification of electromagnetism is the crowning triumph of classical field physics:
- In How Humans Discovered Electricity, we traced the empirical discovery of static charge, Volta's battery, and Faraday's motors.
- In How Newton's Laws Govern Motion, we learned how forces produce acceleration. The Lorentz force equation ($\mathbf{F} = q(\mathbf{E} + \mathbf{v} \times \mathbf{B})$) merges Newton's mechanics with Maxwell's fields.
