- Cuneiform required memorizing over 600 distinct signs.
- Egyptian hieroglyphs required memorizing between 700 and 1,000 signs.
Each sign could be a logogram (representing an entire word or idea), a syllabogram (representing a complex syllable like kán, mur, or sha), or a silent determinative (a semantic category tag telling you whether the word was a city, a god, or a wooden object).
To become a scribe in ancient Thebes or Babylon took a decade of brutal, dawn-to-dusk memorization in specialized scribal academies (Edubba). Scribes formed an entrenched, hereditary aristocracy. 1. The Discovery: Serabit el-Khadim (1905)
In the winter of 1905, British archaeologist Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie and his wife Hilda Petrie were excavating an isolated, windswept mountain plateau in the south-western Sinai Peninsula called Serabit el-Khadim.
The site was a desolate landscape of sandstone ridges, ancient slag heaps, and dark mine shafts. For centuries during the Middle and New Kingdoms (roughly 2000–1200 BCE), Egyptian pharaohs dispatched military and mining expeditions to this plateau for one precious mineral: turquoise—the shimmering, blue-green gemstone prized by Egyptian nobility as a symbol of rebirth and fertility.

While exploring the turquoise mine shafts and the temple rubble, Petrie discovered several small, crude stone carvings that did not look like standard Egyptian monuments:

A decade later, in 1916, the brilliant British Egyptologist Sir Alan Gardiner cracked the code.
Gardiner noticed a repeating sequence of four signs on the little sandstone sphinx:

Gardiner knew that the miners working these shafts were not native Egyptians. Egyptian expedition records explicitly named them as Aamu—Asiatics, or Canaanites from the Levant (modern Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and Lebanon) hired for their desert survival skills and mining labor.
Gardiner asked: What if these Canaanite miners spoke a Northwest Semitic language (an ancestor of Hebrew and Phoenician), looked at Egyptian pictures, and used them to write down their own words?
He translated the four signs using Semitic phonetics:

In standard Egyptian writing, an ox head could mean many things: it could mean an actual cow, it could be part of an agricultural formula, or it could serve as a silent classifier.

Look closely at that table.
Every single letter you use today to write an email, sign a contract, or search the internet is a relic of Bronze Age Egyptian pictograms:
- Turn the letter A upside down: $\forall$. The two legs pointing up are the horns of the ox; the triangle pointing down is its snout.
- Look at the letter M: the peaks and troughs are the ripples of water flowing down the Nile.
- Look at the letter O: it is the round human eyeball.
- Look at the letter B: it is the two rooms of a Mesopotamian or Canaanite mudbrick house.
3. The Phoenician Standardization (~1200–800 BCE)
For its first six centuries (roughly 1850 to 1200 BCE), the Proto-Sinaitic alphabet remained a marginal, informal script used by nomads, mercenaries, and trading caravans in the Levant. Scribes in royal palaces still wrote in Babylonian cuneiform or Egyptian hieroglyphs.
Then, around 1200 BCE, the Late Bronze Age Collapse struck the Mediterranean. Within a single century, the great centralized empires—the Mycenaeans in Greece, the Hittites in Anatolia, and the New Kingdom in Egypt—collapsed under the combined blows of drought, famine, internal rebellions, and the invasions of the "Sea Peoples."

To run a fast-moving maritime trading empire, you cannot wait ten years to train an accountant. You need ship captains, warehouse foremen, and harbor agents who can write a bill of lading, log a shipment of amphorae, and record a debt instantly.
Around 1050 BCE, the Phoenicians took the sprawling, irregular Proto-Canaanite symbols and standardized them into a clean, geometric 22-letter alphabet:
- They fixed the letter forms into crisp, linear strokes drawn with ink on papyrus or chiseled into stone.
- They locked the alphabetical order: ’Alp, Bayt, Gaml, Dalt... (the origin of our alphabetical order today).
- They fixed the direction of writing from right to left.
The Phoenician script was an abjad—a consonantal alphabet that wrote only consonants, leaving the reader to supply the vowels based on context.
Because Semitic languages are built on root templates of three consonants (for example, in Arabic or Hebrew, the root $k-t-b$ always relates to writing: kitāb is a book, kātib is a writer, kataba is he wrote), native speakers can easily infer the vowels from grammatical context.
4. The Greek Vocalic Revolution: Inventing the True Alphabet (~800 BCE)
Around 800 BCE, Phoenician traders established permanent trading posts in the Aegean Sea, mingling with Greek-speaking merchants on islands like Euboea and Crete.
The ancient Greeks were dazzled by the Phoenician script. The Greek historian Herodotus explicitly recorded that writing was brought to Greece by a Phoenician prince named Cadmus, which is why early Greeks called their letters phoinikeia grammata—"Phoenician letters".

However, when Greeks tried to write their language with the Phoenician abjad, it broke completely.
Greek is an Indo-European language, not a Semitic language. In Indo-European languages, vowels are not grammatical modifiers; vowels carry core semantic meaning:
- The English words bad, bed, bid, bud, and bode share the exact same consonants ($b-d$), but represent completely unrelated concepts.
- If you write them without vowels as BD, the sentence becomes unreadable gibberish.

- ’Aleph became Alpha (the vowel /a/).
- He became Epsilon (the vowel /e/).
- 'Ayin became Omicron (the vowel /o/).
- Yodh became Iota (the vowel /i/).
- Waw was split into Upsilon (the vowel /u/) and Digamma (/w/).
In that moment, the world’s first true phonetic alphabet was born.
For the first time in human existence, every sound produced by human vocal anatomy—both consonants and vowels—was mapped to a discrete, unambiguous visual glyph. You no longer needed to know the context of a word to read it; you simply sounded out the letters.
